...It is OUR right and duty to find ways of acting politically when the accepted fields of politics are consistently experienced as little more than bronzed bullshit. We have discovered that talking to 'the system' on its own terms -- be it via voting, or the courts, or researchers -- is like talking to a refrigerator... the lights goes on, the light goes off, but it can not do anything that it isn't already programmed to do. (to paraphrase Utah Phillips)

The vast majority of drivers on Lake Shore Drive are individuals misusing our global resources to traverse the most populated area for 800 miles in any direction, in their own private coach, to the detriment of our air, public parks, transit, commerce and public health & safety. We owe them nothing.

Everytime I ride the mass, I am further energized to keep riding my bicycle, to push my limits in endurance and tolerance for weather. With me are the other massers--cyclists of varying abilities and dedication--who encourage my biking and validate my refusal to be a 'cager' like society expects me to be. People around me serve as role models for pushing the envelope and serve as resources for how to accomplish that goal.

I feel we have much to be heartened by in terms of biking. I see more people riding in Chicago than 5, even 2 years ago. Urban sprawl, auto-dependency are being covered in the mainstream media. Not often or well enough, but it's there. I just hope we can stay energized enough to prevent this movement from turning into a fad. If I ever propagate, I hope my grandchildren are glad we whittled away at carcentric culture. There will be a bunch of old timers who still insist on driving everywhere, but it will be considered uncool. Kids will be embarrassed when grandma insists on driving to the store. . . They will duck when riding in the car so their friends won't see them.

Another working day has ended, only the rush hour hell to face. Packed like lemmings into shiny metal boxes, contestants in a suicidal race.

Cyclists have a right to the road, too, you noisy, polluting, inconsiderate maniacs! I hope gas goes up to eight bucks a gallon!
